History of Dragon Boating and Cancer
In 1999, Club SAKE paddler Hong Ho wanted to expand the Seattle team's mission and memorialize her mother who had died of cancer. To do this, she called Team Survivor Northwest to offer Club SAKE's assistance in starting a dragon boat team of women cancer survivors. As a result, about ten enthusiastic survivors and Team Survivor Northwest volunteers showed up that August. Those who participated splashed and laughed their way through practices for the rest of the summer; by September they were hooked. Today the program has over sixty women survivors on the active roster! Two full boats go out at every practice and the program growth shows no signs of slowing down. |
